The 26th president, Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, established Mesa Verde National Park on June 29, 1906. He established the park because he wanted to "preserve the works of man." Congress had created the park by the Antiquities Act. The act was passed to preserve the important resources and ancient artifacts found in the park.

People from the Four Corners region lived in Mesa Verde National Park about 1,400 years ago. The descendants of the group had build many stone buildings and shelters of the canyon walls. As years passed, the people left Mesa Verde and left their marvelous work on display. We look back at the work of the Pueblos to remind us who stood here years before.
Many cliff dwellings, pithouses, pueblos, and towers are found all around the park. The spectacular work of the Puebloans are can be easily viewed even from far away.
